Everything WRONG with Rei X Mamoru

Aggressive and nearly universally panned, this one sided relationship actually left behind a residual stink for way longer than you remember.

Rei blushes while looking at Mamoru | Sailor Moon News
Now being honest, when I was 8-10 years old and all I had access to was the DiC edit of Sailor Moon, I almost thought this was a good idea. Why? Because as "Darien" and "Raye" they were both major assholes to "Serena" so as a kid, I figured bullies belonged with bullies and maybe they'd end up having asshole bullies for children, before I dunno, Darien beats her and Raye cleans his ass out in divorce court.

No, he didn't father Rei's daughter. But come on, you should expect me to squeeze in Parallel Sailor Moon into everything by now. Hell, I even hid Kousagi in here. Moving on. I'm going back to using Japanese names BTW.

So anyway, after the series started to pick up steam, I started to have a change of heart. I started to see some of the flaws with this relationship. But now that I'm an adult and I've gotten so used to the Japanese version, I freaking hate this relationship, and it looks like I am really not by myself on this. If you look up "Rei and Mamoru" on Google, the fan art for this ship stops way early in the search, and articles about why Mamoru is better off with Usagi start popping up.

This relationship did nothing but waste everyone's time and make Rei look like the ultimate douche. It was already bad enough that Toei decided to make her a straight up bully towards Usagi for just about all of the first season, but this entire fiasco made Rei out to be conniving, vicious, pushy, hostile, spiteful and a control freak. 90's anime Rei deviates so far from her manga and Crystal counterparts that she may as well be a different character altogether.

Before we go any further, I need to address one of the most popular rumors of the new generation of Moonies. It's theorized that Toei opted to change most of Rei's personality and even her dreams to better match her voice actress at the time, J-Pop idol Michie Tomizawa. While that may explain that one episode where Rei sings for her school presentation and why she kind of thieves a lot of Minako's dreams and quirks overall, I want you to stop and think very hard about this for a second. This rumor makes the claim (and this was hinted in a few magazines) that Rei's personality was to mimic her voice actress's fiery personality.

YOU ACTUALLY WANTED REI TO BE A BITCH BECAUSE YOU THINK TOMIZAWA-SAN WAS A BITCH TOO????
Tomizawa Michie :: Three-Lights.net Gallery
Now, I've never met her, so I can't say how she really is, but what I've been finding over and over is that because Tomizawa-san was assertive, the MEN who wrote this season decided to make Rei a bitch because they viewed her fiery personality as being a bitch. This right here illustrates the misogyny of the 1990s. Are you a docile little doormat? No? Then you're a bitch. And why not? It fits so many other issues they'd do in later seasons, such as erasing The Amazoness Quartet's powers and making Chibiusa a joke character, omitting half of the Sailor Animamates, erasing Sailor Cosmos/Chibi Chibi's true story or lest we forget, making Kaolinite and The Witches 5 practically beg Professor Tomoe for attention. Yeah, those of you who watched the 3rd season of Crystal got a big fat wake up call, right? So you can imagine the bucket of problems I have with this theory. Is it true? Well the evidence seems that way, but if that's the case, then good lord, I bet you're all happy Crystal had A LOT more of a female touch, now aren't you?
MamoRei: Mamoru x Rei | Sailor moon, Sailor mars, Sailor
Another theory her voice actress brought up was that Rei is mistaking an admiration for Mamoru's brains and independence as being feelings of love, but I can't see Rei being that confused at this age. The script makes it crystal clear that Rei wants Mamoru to be her boyfriend, and all of the desires that go with having a boyfriend are front and center. I can see her MAYBE mistaking lust for love, which is easy to do at her age, and fits everything I'm about to type.

Okay, so now that I've gotten that off my chest, let's go back to the drama that is this relationship. So it all starts in episode 15 of the original anime where Rei finds out that this beautiful park is going to be bulldozed and the old man who runs it is going to be out of a job. He has no money and no pension, so he's facing the prospect of being homeless in a bad economy. Does Rei give two thirds of a shit? Nope! That's Ami's job. Ami is the one with a heart about the old man. What's Rei thinking? "I better get a boyfriend and go on a date fast before the park disappears." Wow, fucking wow, right?

So because of this, she starts asking Motoki a bunch of NOSEY questions about Mamoru. Motoki lets it slip that Mamoru is living alone (we find out later that's because he is an orphan with no family) but because his dead family was loaded, he is by proxy, a rich ass motherfucker and he is going to a good college and came from a good high school.

So right off the bat, she doesn't even love him. She initially wants to use him just to say she had a date at the park, but then when she learns about his life, she decides to use him even more because he is rich, is going to a good school so ergo has good job prospects, and she thinks he's kinda cute.

Now you're probably used to this ugly, kinda racist stereotype of women, especially women from Asia, where all they can think about is what a man can do for them. If I have a rich/smart husband with job prospects, I can hitch a ride on them coat tails to the stars, right? And supposedly when this show first aired in Japan, there was an economic free fall and A LOT of girls and women really were thinking about how the right guy could raise their social status. That's the stereotype everyone got comfortable with, right? Well here's the thing.

 REI AIN'T BROKE.
The Case of the Perpetual Victim
Although we never see him in the 90s anime, Rei's father (top left corner) is a rich ass politician. And we know Rei is loaded herself, because in a few episodes, she's gonna rent a fucking mansion on the beach for vacation.
Sailor Moon Crystal
Have you ever rented a mansion on a beach?? If this 14 year old can easily afford to rent a mansion on a beach, then BITCH YOU DON'T NEED MAMORU'S WALLET.

So in order to take money from an orphan, this shameless bitch actively stalks Mamoru specifically so she can get in his pants. Yes folks. They straight up made Sailor Mars, champion of justice, a no good succubus.

She even gets so obsessive, she plans out what she thinks he will do.

Well her little plan backfires initially, and she gets a face full of cement and a stomp to the head for her trouble. If it had ended here and she'd find another guy, I could have lived with this.

Just to drive home how very much this should have been the end of it, Mamoru walks fucking away. Yeah, Captain I-Need-To-Save-Every-Female just walked away after assaulting her. Yes, you can argue that Rei's injuries are accidental, but come on, this should have ended with her calling him an unsavory name under her breath and moving onto the next available dick in town.

But NOPE. She persists, making Mamoru VERY uncomfortable.

Yes, I am laughing my ass off at Usagi's line right here, but she's not wrong. He IS too old for the both of them (The old anime aged him up by a year, making him 18 while the girls are 14, Rei having just turned 14 not that long ago) but that's not even the worst thing.

He is being coerced into a situation he does NOT want to be in.
Sailormoon. Episode 11: Usagi vs Rei? A Nightmare in Dreamland. Sailor Mars, Tuxedo Mask, and Sailor Moon. | SAILOR MOON ✞ | Playa
Now look, I know what you were about to type, so let me clear the air.

Yes, he is a grown ass man.

Yes, he should be screaming "NO" from the top of his lungs.

But we also learn in this season that he has a hard time telling people who ought to hear it "NO" unless they happen to be Usagi. Usagi is the only person he feels comfortable enough around to show his fugly side.

And Rei's daddy is a major politician.

So Rei has political power.

Rei can make him disappear with a phone call.

Rei is a Miko/shrine maiden.

Rei is also a 14 year old girl.

Rei can scream and make the police come take his ass away.

Rei can fuck his entire life up and he already knows that.

So yes, Mamoru is contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and that is super wrong.

But Mamoru is also being coerced into a relationship he does not want.

And yes, this level of abuse DOES HAPPEN TO MEN TOO.

So yeah, Mamoru finds himself in a predicament you usually hear about with women instead, where he gets pressured into a date with Rei. Because she is paying, he feels obligated to drink coffee with her even though he is very uncomfortable. I feel like I need to say this again. Yes, it is entirely possible for a man to be in this situation. It has happened to men. It is still wrong. This is exactly the same as when a female is pressured into going out with a guy just because he paid for a drink she never asked for. All we did was switch the gender roles. This is every bit as wrong.

Although I will give Rei some credit here, she DOES figure out that Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask before anybody else, so at least she has just this little bit of intelligence going on.

Whenever she's around him, it comes across that she doesn't really care about the same things he does. Like on the first date, he's showing environmental concern and do you think she's paying attention to that? Of course not. Only thing on her mind us Tuxedo dick.

Episode 18 we get another helping of this madness as Rei drags Mamoru to a doll show. I get that it's super stereotypical to think he wouldn't want to be at a doll show because he's a man, but that's not really the issue. SHE is making him uncomfortable way more than the dolls do.

In episode 18 and again in episode 27, we get the firm impression that SHE is calling the shots. SHE is making the plans, but he's either incredibly uncomfortable or just not paying attention to her. She's all over him, grabbing his arm every chance she can get, but he is either trying to back away or he is so focused on his thoughts that he forgets she's even there. That is just how little she matters to him.

So what's Usagi thinking during all of this? Well back in episode 15, Usagi objected to their relationship, but while everyone convinced themselves that it was because Usagi was jealous over Rei getting Mamoru and not her, that was NEVER the case. Her initial rejection is over the fact that Rei is trying to start an improper relationship with a grown ass man, and in the student handbook for both her school and Rei's ultra strict all girls school, that is a giant no-no, the type you can get expelled for. Remember, in Japan at this time, losing face was the worst possible thing you could do outside of committing an actual crime. Rei goes to a very strict, very elite school and this could have caused a major scandal. Usagi's other concern is that because Mamoru is a grown man, he may end up hurting Rei, so even though Rei had done nothing but be a bully up to this point, Usagi cared enough about her team mate to show rational concern, and all Luna did was give her shit for it. And to a lesser degree, Usagi does show a little concern knowing that Rei is dragging Mamoru around. She knows that's wrong. But ultimately, she's more afraid of crossing the wrong boundaries than she is of never being with Mamoru at this point in the series. Even in episode 28, Usagi is more worried about Rei than she is herself. Does she have any feeling for Mamoru here? Slightly, but not really enough to be as jealous as people think she is. I'm really sad that so many people overlook this character growth in Usagi, and only focus on the idea of her getting jealous. But don't worry. If it's jealousy you want, just keep reading.

So aside from Usagi being the voice of reason (yes, NOW you may panic) nobody ever hints at Rei and Mamoru's relationship being horrible until episode 29, when Motoki tells Mamoru that he would never be with Usagi or any of her friends, because they are all still in middle school. This is interesting seeing as how his Crystal, manga and PGSM selves have all been flirty with Makoto much to the chagrin of Reika in the first two I mentioned, and it's refreshing because this is a grown ass man who doesn't want anything from 14 year old babies, but I digress. When Motoki brings up why he would never date Usagi or her friends – and I forgot to mention this, but Mamoru at this stage still only refers to Rei, Ami and Makoto as "Usagi's friends" or rather "Bun Head's friends" did you catch that? Not "Rei" or "Makoto" or even "Rei-chan" just "those girls Usagi hangs around" isn't that wild? Anyway, when Motoki brings his grown ass man knowledge to the table, Mamoru freaks out and thinks of 14 year old Rei, and for the first time, starts to really question this relationship.

Oh, right. I should probably bring this up. Are you ready for this? So get this. In episode 30, we get Yuichiro, who literally shows up on Rei's doorstep. Who is he? Another rich ass, grown ass man posed as a love interest for Rei. First of all, SHE'S 14 what is with her dating around with grown ass men?? Second, she is still with Mamoru at this point, ya wanna wrap up one fiasco before you start another one??

Look, I get that her dad is AWOL and all, but her granddaddy right there. Why doesn't he step in and say something??

WOAH TIME OUT!! AIN'T YOU DATING MAMORU??

Old man, I wish you would take interest in what she's been doing this whole time.

Well by episode 31, Mamoru starts straight up ghosting Rei. He's not answering her calls and their segments in these episodes are getting mercifully smaller. I do have to admit, this is kind of a dick move and he should have just told her "NO" and broken up with her the right way, but can you blame him?

But that's okay, because she almost ends up on a date with Yuichiro, and only misses it by playing hard to get. (Hey, isn't that robot from one of Toei's tokusatsu shows?) Yeah, play this episode back again. She gets ghosted by Mamoru, and is only mildly concerned that something happened to him, so she entertains the thought of dating another grown ass man right behind his back. THIS TWO TIMING LITTLE DOUCHE PURSE, AFTER ALL OF THAT?? REALLY??

Well, karma must have her own Eternal Tiare, folks, because you all know what's coming in episode 35, and it's a long time in coming too.

Oh yeah. He ain't yo' man no mo.

But you know what is really shitty? Like right after Usagi becomes Princess Serenity, and everyone gets the group flashback so we can see he has ALWAYS been Serenity's man, and the princess Rei has been bullying for all this time uses her wand and her crystal to save everybody from being toasted by Zoisite, and everyone watched Mamoru get stabbed to save Princess Serenity, Rei has the nerve, the absolute gall, to walk over to NOT HER MAN ANYMORE YOU CONNIVING LITTLE TWAT WAFFLE, pick his injured ass up, shake him and can you read the subtitles? Ask him to pull himself together. BITCH, HE BLEEDING!! I want you to take a look at that screenshot up there, look at her friends. They all know an intervention needs to be happening like yesterday.

Oh, and here's the best part. SHE LET HIS ASS GET KIDNAPPED. Look at all the room she had, and Kunzite was just able to go *bink* and kidnap his ass.

When Sailor Moon does wake up, she has a bit of a break down. She's trying to separate her life as a 14 year old girl from that of a superhero from that of her past life as a murdered princess, and she's trying to process the guilt of Mamoru having been injured and kidnapped, and Sailor Mars just up and slaps her and calls her a coward for wait, what was that again? Oh yeah. Having human emotions! Oh shame on you, kid Usagi whom I was supposed to protect in my past life and I blew that too! No, you're the real coward, not my bitch ass.

Rei starts to cry and let that jealousy flag fly. Yeah, we're supposed to feel sad for her because the man she coerced into a one sided relationship actually belongs to the girl she's been bullying? Am I supposed to feel sorry for her? Excuse me??

Episode 36 Artemis (who in the previous episode asked everyone to give Usagi some breathing room) suddenly has no chill. Rei FOR ONCE actually sticks up for Usagi, saying she knows how she feels. The one you love is missing, and this is supposed to make me think she really did love Mamoru when we can see that was not the case.

While Makoto is nice enough to feel for Rei, thinking maybe Rei did have feelings after all, Artemis still has no chill. I just want to point that out that he has no time for your bullshit.

Now near the end of this episode, they find out that Mamoru is possessed, and I guess this is about as close to a break up as we're going to get out of these two.

This is evil Tuxedo Mask for "bitch please, lose my damn number".

Translation: Bitch, come at me again and I'mma commit a hate crime.

Translation: This bitch ain't loyal, watch your back, Sailor Moon.

But you know what? Even Makoto has a limit. By the end of the episode, Makoto sees two different responses. One is out of Rei, who until he rebuked her, was acting like he'll just come home and go back to being her puppet, while Usagi was just happy he's still alive even if he is evil. So Makoto joins Artemis on Team Get-The-Fuck-Over-It and Rei just has to eat it.

Episode 38 is supposed to act as the closure to this fiasco. Usagi plays her locket, and then slams it closed and apologizes to Rei, because she didn't want to hurt her feelings. She actually addresses Rei's relationship as if it wasn't a one sided issue, and Rei tells her that she's already decided to let this go. Honestly, I'm proud of Usagi here. She really wasn't trying to be a homewrecker or anything, and even though Rei has been (and continues to be past this point) a major bully, she was kind enough to show Rei some sort of compassion here.

I guess it works to a small point, because Rei actually uses Endymion's love for Serenity to try to make Mamoru wake up out of this possession, and it actually almost works.

So you must be thinking "Okay, so she acknowledges that this was wrong from the start, and her friendship with Usagi is going to make all of this stop and we won't have to deal with their relationship ever again" right?

LOL.

So in episode 56, Rei catches Mamoru praying at her shrine. He was supposed to be in a play at Juban Hall with his friends, but his guy friends are bigger bitches than Usagi's friends, and they all had a big fight and fucked off. So Rei calls everyone together and suggests they invite themselves into the production and take over. She decides – and let me be clear, NOBODY ASKED HER – that they're all going to do a play based on Snow White.

And she casts Mamoru as the prince, and then demands to be Snow White, specifically so she can kiss him in front of everyone.

What a bitch thing to do. You KNOW Usagi is trying to get him to remember who he is. You KNOW they are supposed to be an item, and yet here you are, still trying to push Mamoru into doing things he isn't comfortable with. He didn't ask you to do any of this. You just came here and decided you were going to kiss him in a Snow White play. You hussy.

Episode 63 Tuxedo Mask pulls Sailor Moon back, allowing Sailor Mars to bring out her newest attack. In return, Mars nudges Moon towards getting close to him again.

Now in episode 66, things start to get weird. Mamoru, Usagi and Chibiusa are trying to prepare for Chibiusa's school curry party and Chibiusa gets a little frustrated with Usagi. We get a little flashback, giving us the idea that Usagi and Mamoru are her parents, but Chibiusa tries to brush it off. Anyway, post spat while Usagi is honestly trying to get the right groceries for this, Rei walks by. She actually scolds Chibiusa for being mean to (I don’t care who this butt hurts) her mom, Usagi, and Chibiusa tries to change the subject by asking Rei to come to her school in Usagi's place, because Rei can actually cook. Rei at first refuses, and Mamoru even suggests leaving Chibiusa with Rei for the day so that he isn't seen with Rei, and Rei reconsiders.

Now full disclosure, Chibiusa doesn't yet know that Rei and Mamoru used to have a one sided relationship. But all three of them just feel dirty and wrong sitting together like this. Rei is not Chibiusa's mom, and she and Rei both decide at the same time to go get Usagi.

Remember what I said before about when I was a child and how I was thinking they would make a family? Well this is as close to that asshole family as we will ever get. Embrace it. But even here, look at Mamoru's body language, he is really uncomfortable even after all this time.

She even breaks away from this scene early, and you can just feel that bounce in her step leaving the kid with her father.

Episode 70 I'm throwing in just because Rei and Usagi were talking about Mamoru. Rei insists that even though he's being a cold asshole, Usagi should continue to pursue him, and Koan just flat out turns off the evil for a minute to teach these girls about self respect. This really gives some insight into what Rei thinks is a relationship, and you know it's bad when a main villain stops her villainy on a dime to stand up and say something.

Episode 77 she again nudges Sailor Moon towards Tuxedo Mask, this time getting them back together, and aside from episode 88 where she does call out to Mamoru when Black Lady hits him and the R movie where she does help Sailor Moon gather the courage to go save him, you'd think this is where this thing ends and we don't hear about it again.

SYKE! You were wrong, now weren't you? So in episode 93, Usagi is really trying her damndest to grow the fuck up. She really is trying to study more, but when she reaches out to her friends for help, she gets her little moon princess hand slapped proverbially. So Mamoru decides to take her on the classiest date of her life. Like all the stops are pulled. We're talking fancy dress and a classical music concert, a night fit for a princess. And who fucking shows up? Rei and her friends to phone in a fake apology and use Usagi's special date as a chance to invite herself and their buds to the concert Mamoru paid to go enjoy ALONE WITH USAGI.

Then while Usagi and Mamoru are trying to enjoy the concert and their date, Rei starts beating on Usagi and yelling at her while also making Mamoru (are you tired of me saying this yet?) extremely uncomfortable. She also almost gets the two of them thrown out. The fuck kind of friend would even do something so awful?? Did you forget that is your future queen??

Look at poor Mamoru. He is SHOOK by the fact he could have ended up with this crazy bitch.

His hands are over his heart, he looks like he just saw Jesus and Jesus was like "run Mamo-chan" and he's all like "Oh thank GOD I'm not having Chibiusa with THAT."

Do you think he even sleeps at night? Hell no, this will haunt his nightmares way worse than what Queen Nehellenia's gonna do at the start of Sailor StarS. Boy probably prowls the night as Tuxedo Mask so she won't be waiting for him in his dreams.

And then after a daimon fucks up the concert, Mamoru offers to take Usagi to a nice dinner and what does Rei do? She muscles her way in and uses everyone to pressure Mamoru into paying for their meals too, and she starts hanging onto his arm like she's his girlfriend again. What a fucking bitch, I can't even believe she had the nerve to do that shit.

In episode 101, Mamoru calls Rei because Usagi has hit him and he doesn't understand why. It's a cringe moment seeing Usagi of all people resort to domestic violence, and again, this abuse DOES happen to men and IT IS STILL ABUSE and I can't believe Usagi did that, but anyway, he's only calling Rei to get her advice on how to fix things with Usagi. God, I feel so awful for him.

Well Rei is no better! She uses the opportunity to bitch him out over what went wrong in their relationship before reminding him that it's Usagi's birthday and he forgot. Yes, she went there. This man has been abused and all he is looking for is help, and Rei just stands there blaming him for what went wrong in the relationship she coerced him in. That is straight up mental abuse.

In the Super Famicom game Sailor Moon: Another Story, there's a dream sequence where Rei and Mamoru get back together. She makes it clear she really isn't that over him in the game.

The true end to this nightmare comes in episode 136, but boy is it a doozy. Rei sort of pressures Mamoru into staying at her place, after the group study session at his apartment ends up with a fire extinguisher destroying his teeny weeny apartment.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal: Act 7: Mamoru Chiba - Tuxedo Mask
And can we just stop for a minute and appreciate Sailor Moon Crystal? Not only is Rei never a bitch in this anime and Mamoru not an asshole, but the two of them never hook up, Rei ends up super sweet with the rare exception of three mini scenes. Usagi and Mamoru get together way early, Mamoru is sweet and his apartment is actually large and kind of nice.
Fabulous Fandom Fun — The Documentation of Chiba Mamoru's Apartment...
I don't know why his apartment is so basic in the 90s. I get that he's a college kid and the original staff didn't like him so much (you can tell because Yamucha voices him, LOL) but come on, This is Tuxedo Mask. You can still decorate on a budget!

Anyway, seeing as how Mamoru is in a bad spot, it's decided he will stay at Rei's place, but Diana doesn't trust Rei, so she decides to guard Mamoru so that nothing happens to him.

Rei's grandfather, you remember, the guy who flipped out over Yuichiro wanting to be with Rei? Well not only does he want to push Rei to get with Mamoru, but he has a crush on him too! Not only that, but we learn here that he was totally unaware of Rei and Mamoru's relationship. That's right. She bullied Mamoru into a relationship, and then didn't even have the courage to face her grandfather, the man who stepped in and raised her when her daddy went AWOL, and tell him who she was dating. Un fucking real. And he actually would have been HAPPY if she had told him.

And yes.

Usagi's friends to have to restrain her before she beats Rei's ass in front of her child.

Oh, and Rei also hid her relationship from Yuichiro too. She dated Mamoru for almost a full season and didn't tell her grandfather or her other man. This raggedy bitch.

Oh yeah, did I mention? They all forgot to tell Chibiusa. Yeah kid, remember how dirty you felt when she sat with your daddy and you didn't know why? Well that's because your favorite auntie was almost yo' mama. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.

MY EYES!!

So Rei ends up seeing Mamoru in the nude, albeit not on purpose.

Do you think that matters to Usagi? Oh HELL no. Having known Rei for this long, Usagi couldn't trust Rei with her man, so she broke in as a literal ninja and made herself at home on Rei's property. Yeah, you're the daughter of a politician? Bitch I'm about to be the damn QUEEN. I'm not afraid of your boujee ass.

Now of course, everyone else in this episode makes the claim that Usagi needs to trust Mamoru more and that breaking and entering is a crime, and okay, I see that, but let's be real here. Rei pushed Mamoru into this situation. Rei has already proven more than once that when it comes to Mamoru, she has no loyalty to Usagi except for three instances, Rei has already shown she has no problem with manipulating Mamoru and even here, even here, she blames him for the problem of her walking in on his ass. She takes absolutely zero responsibility for her actions. She blames Mamoru for every bad situation she puts him in.

As for Usagi? Have you ever seen this show before? She has had to bring his ass back from so many bad women who manipulated him and possessed him that protecting him should be second nature to her by now. Plus? Think this over. Not only is he supposed to be her future husband, but she has been raising their daughter now for two seasons while she is still in school. The stakes for Usagi are A LOT higher right now than they were the first two seasons, and this frienemy just went and put her man up at her house like she already claim him on her taxes. Ah HELL YES Usagi gets to be jealous. HELL YES she gets to sneak up on Rei's ass, and HELL YES Rei earned that beating she took when the camera panned back.

Hell, I don't even believe Rei when she says this. She even called him "Mamo-chan" instead of her normal "Mamoru-san" right here. If you take no interest in Mamoru, then why is he in your home? Usagi didn't even get a chance to make an arrangement at her house, you know damn well at this point where Mamoru has been coming over to help her and their baby study that she could just lie her ass off and have her dumbass parents believe he's just there to study. Not even like it's the only time THIS SEASON Usagi or Chibiusa has had strange people stay at their house. But nope, Rei just pushed Mamoru into this mess before Usagi could even have a chance with her man, and poor little Diana has lost sleep trying to look out for him on behalf of Usagi, her future queen.

Did you know Rei was the victim of the day? I didn't even feel sorry for her. And you know what? Neither did Mamoru. He was more upset at himself for not helping Usagi than he was Rei, how do you like them apples?

Well at least this episode was our final closure on this bizarre relationship, as Rei is already on the prowl for her next boyfriend.

You know, while her other man is trying to get her attention.

Everything about this relationship was wrong from the start. The manipulation, the pushiness, it was toxic from day one. It made Rei a monster and it made Mamoru out to be weak willed, and it did nothing for the series. The fact that this dragged on as long as it did is truthfully shocking. Fortunately, this never happened in the manga or in Crystal, where Rei's integrity was spared. If for nothing else, let's at least hope that this serves as a way to show people that yes, men can be pushed into the exact same things as a woman, and it is wrong regardless of gender.
