Sailor Moon Cosmos

TRIVIA:

Following Sailor Moon Eternal, Sailor Moon Cosmos is a two-part movie, serving as the 5th and final season of Sailor Moon Crystal.

Originally scheduled for summer, 2023, Cosmos corresponds to the StarS arc of the manga, and would be the first appearance for the Sailor Starlights since the end of both the anime and manga in 1997.

Following the trend from Sailor Moon Eternal, Sailor Moon Cosmos is closer to the manga. As a result, this is the first time Princess Kakyuu transforms into Sailor Kakyuu on screen, as she was not seen becoming a Sailor Guardian in Sailor StarS.

This is also the animated debut for Sailor Heavy Metal Papillion, Sailor Lethe, Sailor Mnemosyne, Sailor Phi, Sailor Chi and Guardian Cosmos. All of these characters were absent in Sailor StarS but featured in the manga.

This is also considered to be the official debut for Sailor Cosmos. The closest we get to Sailor Cosmos in Sailor StarS is Chibi Chibi's adult form as The Light Of Hope in episode 200, which looked very similar to Sailor Cosmos but with Sailor Uranus's shoes.

This is also the first time Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon is seen with her wand and a full transformation sequence in animated form. In Sailor StarS, her wand is missing and she only had a brief transformation silhouette.

This is the first time the Sailor Amazoness Quartet fight alongside Eternal Sailor Chibi Moon. In SuperS, the girls spent most of their time as villains, and although cleansed by the end of the season, they never transformed and bow out in episode 166. Sailor Moon Cosmos marks their second outing transformed since Sailor Moon Eternal Part 2.

This is also the first time Usagi and Mamoru's official wedding is animated. The 90s anime only had "what if" dream sequences, though merchandise was sold at the start of Sailor Moon S of their wedding in various forms.

Unlike Sailor Moon Eternal, Sailor Moon Cosmos has two fully animated openings for each film, with nods to the 90s anime.

Part One was released in Japan on June 9, 2023 and Part 2 on June 30, 2023.

Tomoya Takahashi replaced Chiaki Kon as director. Both have worked on the Pretty Cure/PreCure series. Chiaki Kon had been the director for the Sailor Moon Crystal series since season three and had previously directed Sailor Moon Eternal/Crystal season four.

Like Eternal, Cosmos was animated with a style more similar to the 1990s anime.

While Japan would be scheduled for a theatrical run, worldwide, Cosmos was slated for a Netflix distribution only.
