The Full Pilot

Completed in 1994, this pilot would have been a hybrid of live-action footage and newly animated footage in an American cartoon style.

Although Seven Great Youma/Rainbow Crystal Carrier monsters Bakene, Gesen and Jiji are traced and used for this pilot, nothing is done in an anime style. Every animated scene is done in a "Saturday Morning" style of American animation.

Animators for this project also worked on Bravestarr and She-Ra, with the voice actress behind She-Ra voicing Queen Serenity, Queen Beryl and Luna here.

Because of the acting, set design and similarity to Saban's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Tenko and the Guardians Of The Magic, this pilot was referenced as "Saban Moon" though the company had no involvement. However, some of the Tenko animators worked with Toonmakers on this, and it would have shared a distribution company with Saban by was of Renaissance, who would later try another live-action Sailor Moon tokusatsu spin-off involving teenaged angels.

Curiously, this pilot referenced the Inner Sailor Guardians as "princesses" although their princess forms would not be revealed in the manga until the February 1996 issue of Nakayoshi Magazine. Until this issue, only Usagi and Chibiusa had been seen in their princess forms.

While left out of the ten-minute pilot available online, the original script had Queen Beryl kidnapping the Outer Sailor Guardians and stealing their crystals. This predates the Sailor StarS and StarS Arc story of Sailor Galaxia stealing their star seeds by more than two years.

Prince Endymion is re-named "Prince Darian" in the special. When DiC took over the license, the name was kept, but the spelling changed to "Darien". The logo was also kept and would later be used by Cloverway and by various companies in Canada, Mexico and Germany on a variety of merchandise.

Many of the toys planned for this version of Sailor Moon were later re-used for the DiC edit of the original anime, including the Moon Cycle and a variation of Usagi/Serena/Victoria's brooch. Curiously, bootleg figures exist of Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako and Chibiusa in the same costumes as the girls in this pilot.

One of the names used in this pilot was also used by DiC in a pitch reel shortly before the dub debuted in 1995. Usagi's Toonmakers name Victoria/Vicky was kept before they changed it to Serena. Ami was Blue before becoming Amy, Rei was Dana/Dayna before becoming Raye Makoto/Mako was Sara/Sarah before becoming Lita and Minako/Mina was Carrie before retaining the name Mina. Tuxedo Mask was The Masked Tuxedo.

Curiously in 1993, an international doll release of the first five girls was produced by BanDai Asia with multiple languages on the back of the boxes. Here, the names would have been Serena for Sailor Moon, Amy for Sailor Mercury, Raye for Sailor Mars, Lita for Sailor Jupiter and Matilda for Sailor Venus. This predates Toonmakers by one year and DiC by two years.
