Umino

Umino is the class nerd and is often nosey. Until Sailormoon S, Umino has a crush on Usagi, but winds up having a relationship with Naru.

image010Introduction of Kenji and Motoki. First time Usagi plays the Sailor V game. First time the episode opens with an introduction from Usagi.

First episode dropped by DiC in the US in 1995. This episode was cut due to various scenes of sexual harassment and implied rape, including Umino flipping Ms. Haruna's skirt, exposing her underwear, Umino trying to force himself on Usagi, and another scene where Baamu encourages the zombie boys to do whatever they want to Sailor Moon and then kill her, again, implied rape and torture. Other reasons why this episode was dropped includes implied incest when Usagi compares her father to her crush Motoki, and issues involving the occult where it pertains to the fortune telling scenes and Baamu turning young boys into zombies.

This was the episode that defined Sailor Moon as a series not afraid to be "edgy" when it comes to mature implications.

The episode begins in the early evening, where a group of young girls are heading into a back alley to see an old man give out fortunes. And that sounds like a totally age appropriate activity, right? Well not surprisingly, Jadeite is lurking behind the young girls, and gets the idea to open up his own fortune telling boutique. He pops in on Queen Beryl, just long enough for her to remind him that the Silver Crystal still hasn't been found. This impatience of hers is going to last the next few episodes, so you may as well get used to it.

The next morning, Luna is trying to get Usagi out of bed. Once again, this kid has managed to set her alarm WAY past when she should have, making herself late a night early. Is she really that dim, Toei? Look guys, I know you made her blonde, but does she really have to be SO dim that she can't even figure out a clock?? Ah well. Moving forward. Usagi literally tries to crawl silently into class, and almost makes it to her desk before Ms. Haruna sees her, but Umino goes and shouts out "GOOD MORNING USAGI!!" earning them both some time to stand out in the hall. Umino sheepishly makes a pass at Usagi, and she writes him off as weird.

Later that day, Naru finds Umino under a tree. Umino has called Naru over, because he wants her input on his idea to ask Usagi on a date. He even goes so far as to imply he will instantly meet her parents, and then they will wed. Naru laughs at the clearly insane boy. And then this happens:

HOLY CRAP!! He's not even possessed yet, and already we have our first rape quote of the day. Good freaking lord!!

Naru suggests he go check out the fortune teller, and Umino instead shows her an LCD game he develops, where Chibi Umino unquestionably follows Chibi Usagi, gives her flowers and then automatically marries her. Did you hear that? That was this kid's creep factor just jumping way the fuck up. Of course, Naru screams at him to again, go see a REAL fortune teller……. Because a psychiatrist is totally out of the question at this point, right? But anyway, she tells him about House of Fortune, a new fortune teller that just opened up across the street from the creepy guy in the alley. Again, this is all normal behavior for a couple of 14 year olds, right?

Well later that evening, we finally catch up to Usagi on her jog home. She decides to stop at the old man in the alley's cardboard box, because she feels bad that everyone else just suddenly deserted him to go see the professional fortune teller inside the clean, new building across the street. By the way, where the fuck are your parents? So while the old man in the alley is telling her that there's a boy near to her who likes her, Umino goes inside the new fortune telling office.

On her way home, Usagi convinces herself that the boy who likes her is probably Motoki, the handsome college student who runs the Crown Arcade. She catches up with him on his way in for his night shift, and he offers to show her the brand new Codename Sailor V game. She gets Chibi Sailor V killed the first round, so Motoki shows her how to play it the right way. Usagi leans in and starts to feel pretty romantic towards Motoki, who she playfully calls "Oniisan" (Big Brother) even though they're not related. But then Luna sits on the machine, giving the two the stink eye. Motoki mentions that he's seen the cat around a few times, and wonders if she's a stray. Luna bite Usagi's sleeve, trying to tell her to leave the arcade. Cock. Block.

Usagi bids her goodbyes, and Motoki decides to be a flirt, by saying that he feels better every time she's around him. Right. Because that's fine. Perfectly normal for a COLLEGE STUDENT to hit on a 14 year old girl. We're okay with that, right?

Luna of course reminds Usagi about the mission, and tries to get her to come home. Instead, Usagi runs back to where the old man in the alley is, only to find he's all of a sudden skipped town with his cardboard box. JEEZ creepy much? DUDE!! I literally just gave you money like ten minutes ago, and now you're gone?? Can we say "con artist" boys and girls? Well this leaves Usagi with a decision to make. Either wait for the old man to come back, or check out the new fortune teller. How does she decide? By kicking her shoe off indiscriminately of course! And it lands on Mamoru's very soft head. So as he returns the shoe to her, he claims she is unladylike and won't find a boyfriend unless she changes. Usagi just storms off.

Inside the fortune teller building, Baamu is reading fortunes for Umino and most of the teenagers in the area. She possesses the boys by handing them each evil Tarot cards, which slowly turn the boys evil, and then into zombies. All the teen girls are here too. What happens to them? Well we will just plain NEVER know, because we never see them again. Maybe they get killed? Maybe they got bored and went home? Who knows, it's a lovely continuity error Toei just saddled us with.

After the commercial break, Kenji runs into Usagi. He's coming home from work early with a ton of groceries for Ikuko, and wants to know what Usagi is doing out so late, when she was told to come straight home after school. While he's yapping, Usagi has a creepy two second moment to compare her father to her crush. NOW you know where Chibiusa gets it from. Ew. Kenji accuses her of becoming a delinquent. He then asks what's with the cat. Usagi says Luna is a friend of hers. Seeing NOTHING normal about this at all, Kenji accuses Usagi of having weird friends. Oh Kenji-papa. If only you knew..

The next day, Naru is teasing Usagi about Umino wanting to ask her out. Usagi is freaked out, but before she can process what Naru is saying, Umino shows up in a weird, blue suit. He starts acting like an asshole, and while being rejected by Usagi, gets screamed at by Ms. Haruna. So he eats some bread and flips her skirt, causing Ms. Haruna to cry that because her skirt got flipped, nobody will ever marry her. Yes, I checked my ADV and my Viz discs. She really DOES say this. Any sense made? Nope. Next scene, Umino is laughing at a manga about cows, disrupting class. When Haruna goes to scold him, she's tripped by Yuji, another asshat possessed by Baamu. As the day goes on, more and more boys start acting like assholes, with a gang of them breaking the window to another teacher's office. Each time they act up, Jadeite collects energy from the Tarot cards. Usagi and Naru confront Umino, which prompts Umino to try and force himself on Usagi. She screams and cries, scarring him into running away. Once the bad boys have gone, she calms down.

After school, Luna pushes Usagi to go to the fortune building, become Sailor Moon and investigate. Usagi of course wants nothing to do with this, but Luna is persistent, even when usagi forgets the words 'Moon Prism Power Make Up". Yes, she is the only Sailor Senshi/Guardian to forget her Henshin phrase. Cut her some slack, it's only her second day and she just got threatened by a gang of horny, teen zombie boys.

Inside the building, Sailor Moon transforms and does her speech. Baamu flings cards at Sailor Moon, and then ugs the fuck up. After turning her hair into tentacles, she finishes turning all the boys into zombies, and sends them after our heroine. But as they start to hold her against a wall, Tuxedo Mask chucks a rose at Baamu's head, smiles politely, and then runs away. Isn't he a great superhero? Well chucking a rose causes the boys to freeze, so Baamu starts chasing after Sailor Moon with her head tentacles. Luna reminds her of the tiara, so Sailor Moon hurls the tiara at Baamu, disintegrating her alive. The boys return to being regular, living humans, and Sailor Moon runs off with Luna.

The next day, Umino freaks out about the horrible way he treated everyone, when Usagi runs up to him. She forgives him for the whole rapey incident yesterday. He actually looks her in the eye, and says she's right, he shouldn't worry about it. After all, she doesn't seem to care about failing another test at school, so he should learn from her chipper attitude. She gets mad, but then hears the school bell, signaling that she will be late. She starts to run, only to trip over a crack in the sidewalk.

BONUS!!
At 2:48, start paying SUPER close attention to the girls in the front of the line for the old fortune teller.

We start with a young girl with blue hair and blue eyes:

Not only does this look like Ami Mizuno, A.k.a. Sailor Mercury, she's actually voiced by Aya Hisakawa, the voice of Sailor Mercury!! Toei never said if this was or was not Ami, since here, this girl is seen running with a friend, and Ami is said to have been friendless until she met Usagi. But the girl she's running with looks similar to a schoolgirl we see in Usagi's class and in Ami's cram school later on, leaving the possibility wide open. Again, it's unconfirmed, but she looks like Ami and has Ami's voice.

But this isn't all. There's a small chance Toei just gave us a glimpse into the very very FAR future too.

From far away, we have your standard "pale" anime girl. But up close, doesn't she look familiar? Here, let's update the shading by a few seasons, and update the wardrobe:

Now, before we start jumping to conclusions, I will say this. At the time this episode aired, Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi was still doing Codename Sailor V and was just about to sketch the end of the Dark Kingdom arc and part of the Black Moon arc. She hadn't yet decided on how Sailor Uranus, Neptune or Saturn would look, so it isn't too likely that she had planned out Sailor Lead Crow just yet. However, it's pretty clear that she did pick up a few ideas from Toei crafted stories, so the rumor persists that she took the idea for Lead Crow's image from this episode.

NO proof exists of this of course, but it is a pretty fun idea.

Here's why the story has lasted this long.

When Lead Crow officially debuted in episode 182, we knew by this point that the Animamates had been living on Earth for a good little while. It's possible she could have been living a regular life to a point before Galaxia initiated the search for Starseeds. She already picked out a human name as Karasuma Akane.

Of course if you either watch the first anime or read the manga, you'd realize Lead Crow doesn't show up until Usagi is 16. In this episode, Usagi is only 14, so it's not likely at all that Lead Crow would have just spent the last two years going shopping and such. We also know she isn't in school, so she probably wouldn't be hanging around a bunch of teenagers.

Also debunking the "Is this Lead Crow" myth is the fact that just a few seconds before this close up, (as seen above) the "Karasuma-alike" is seen with pale skin and green eyes. Somehow within two seconds, she goes from a Caucasian teenager to an ethnically nondescript young woman. An oversight by Toei's animation department of course, but one that throws the girl's identity for a loop.

Still, it's fun to think that maybe, just maybe, Toei accidently showed us a glimpse of what if Lead Crow really did lead a normal life before Sailor StarS.
