Quirkalicious~ Moon Sisters In-Jokes!

Can you look through the swirls and find all of the differences in the above picture?

In all 200 episodes, 3 movies, 3 specials and in all the compilations of Sailormoon that I’ve seen, there are numerous quirks that I’m shocked few make mention of! On this page, you’ll see hidden shots, background gags, and even little boo-boos left over by the animation staff of Sailormoon.

For example, have you noticed who Usagi looks like when she uses the Luna Pen to make herself more boyish?

And it seems that Usagi is not alone in this look:

Does this mean that Motoki looks like a girl, or that Haruka looks like a boy?

Another thing that I caught is that often to save time, the animators would add in extra lines, to simulate action. Thing is though, when you frame-by-frame each scene, it looks like… THEY”RE MELTING???

ß Her parents and brother seem annoyed at how often Usagi flies apart. Notice how Ikuko’s eyes are RED? Kenji too! Hey wait a second, how do you explain Usagi and Shingo then??? O_o

Are they ALL deformed?

In episode 75, Chibiusa has a nightmare about the Doom Phantom trying to kill her, right after the fall of Crystal Tokyo.
It appears as though the animators were also having a nightmare:

If you watch the episode normally, it ends with Chibiusa being saved.
If you watch the episode as it’s rewinding, it looks like Chibiusa dies. O_O

Some Sailormoon fans did not like SuperS and StarS as much as earlier seasons. Maybe it was the storylines, the inconsistencies between the anime and the manga, maybe it was the cute factor overload of Chibiusa and Chibi Chibi, or maybe it had something to do with the lazy animation.

The following snippets are from episode 167 of StarS.

One fun constant, is the fact that you can see into the future in almost every episode, not just Sailormoon R!

How you ask? Well, I don’t know if this was planned years in advance or not, but there are a few tiny subliminal images scattered throughout the whole series that lead me to believe that the past, present and future were really one and the same for the Sailor Senshi. Take a look:

ß Moon wrinkle?

All four Inner Sailor Senshi. When they use “Planet Name- Crystal Power” you see wings on a ball, then they disappear. Weird eh? And what the hell is the point with painting their fingernails with the wand as they transform? THEY ALL WEAR GLOVES!!

Even on her wedding day. A tiara?

ß Those bows look familiar, don’t they?

ß GET OFF OF CHIBIUSA’S HEART!! Seriously, that looks like her crystal from the manga.

And of course there are some curiosities that exist about Chibiusa:

ß After seeing Sailormoon R in syndication, my mom and I re-watched an early episode from season one when it came back on my local station. (This was in 1996.) Mama insisted that in the still shots of “Queen Beryl’s lair” (which is also Metallia) she could see a bit of Chibiusa. If you look in the bottom right corner, there’s a pink shadow that looks like Chibiusa’s head from behind!! Now look in Metallia’s right eye, near where the eye meets what would be her nose. It’s Chibiusa!!! Now look in her left eye, there’s a shadow that looks like Artemis! Now look in Metallia’s nose cavity, THERE’S CHIBIUSA AGAIN!!! I did NOT edit this AT ALL, this is from the ACTUAL uncensored, subtitled DVD cut of season one. This shot remains in EVERY episode of the first season, except for episode 20.

If you look carefully, there’s another shadow on the right that looks like Black Lady!

Another thing of note. When I first found out about Kousagi, a lot of people drew her with purple or lavender hair in various fan art pics. I couldn’t understand why, until I was moving everything to moonsisters.org, when I realized: “Hey stupid look at her family tree!!

Ever notice how many kinds of odangoes you can find in Codename Sailor V, Sailormoon and Parallel Sailormoon?

And what’s with the cat hair?

Some transformations mimic others. No, I’m not talking about how Jupiter’s transformations are all identical, save for colors and outfit, I mean the striking similarities Tuxedo Mask’s one time transformation has with Sailor Moon and Chibiusa’s:

There also exists a theory that his PINK transformation might mimic the void Kousagi was in:

There are also fun scenes where you can see hints to Sailor Senshi that you aren’t supposed to see until much later!

The following pics I found by accident on my DVDs.

ß Look at the far right of the picture. Can you see Makoto in a tuxedo with a girl in a yellow dress? This takes place during episode 12.

Episode 12 also has clones of the main characters for this particular story ark. An interesting note, in the anime, Usagi stows away with Luna on board Jadeite’s ship. But in the Tokyopop novel, Darien (Mamoru) gives Serena (Usagi) an extra ticket he had. The anime version doesn’t feature Mamoru any where near the cruise, but the novel has him somewhere on board, injured. Could the below pic be the reason why this was changed?

ß When this scene takes place, Usagi, Rei and Ami are with Luna on the deck. These people are inside the ship’s hull! WTF?

ß In episode 137, Chibiusa is reading a book about fairies. One of the fairies was meant to look like Fish Eye, but looks more like Aluminum Siren! Aluminum Siren doesn’t even appear until StarS!

ß Could Sailor Lead Crow have debuted in Sailormoon episode 2?

ß During the first season, there’s always a girl in Usagi and Naru’s class that mimics Hotaru.

ß Makoto’s lunch bag, just before Luna gives her the transformation pen. Was this a tip off or what?

Now in episode 44, there’s a 3 second shot of a mysterious Senshi in the background. I think its Sailor Neptune.

ß Can you see her? She appears at least twice in the same scene, the picture on the left being taken before Serenity comes up.

Incidentally, when the dead Inners go by, you can make out silhouettes of other Senshi:

ß Both shots here are from episode 84. In this Sailormoon R episode, Chibiusa has a flashback of getting screamed at by two odd figures. Could this be Haruka and Michiru? Also in episode 84, there’s a shot of the stand where the Silver Crystal is held. Take a good look at the stand, and tell me if it looks familiar:

Iron Mouse, Kaori and Usagi all use the SAME Tardis like boxes??

ß WTF? By the time the SuperS movie starts, the Mugen school was already taken down. Sooooooo what’s going on here? IT’S A CONSPIRACY!!

Sometimes, what didn’t make it from the manga, sneaks in right under your nose. In the first issue of Sailormoon, Usagi had a pair of white Sailor V inspired goggles, with which she could see who was in danger. (In this case, Naru.) They weren’t part of Sailor Moon’s costume but did sneak in, in episodes 9 and 20:

There are some spots where you can see the Parallel Senshi, or at least glimpses f what they’ll look like, YEARS before Naoko Takeuchi even drew them!

ß This shot is in episode 81, as the camera pans to Chibiusa’s new classmates. Mina?

ß Episode 194. There’s a child there with an extra set of odangoes. Is that Kousagi or Chibiusa with an odd hair day??

ß Wow! In the manga, Usagi’s hair is kinda curly when she lets it go loose. In the anime, her hair is almost always straight, but right here, it actually forms ringlets like Kousagi’s hair! Coincidence?


Kousagi??

ß In one censored episode of SuperS, a little girl named Nanako became a huge fan of Rei’s. For half the episode, the kid even copied Rei’s look! If you see this episode on YouTube, look closely, there are several scenes with Chibi Rei, looking A LOT like Rei jr:

Episode 170 had plenty of shots of a child Ami, and another Sailor Senshi?

ß When the Inner Senshi are kids, you can see the resemblance to their daughters.

ß Victim #1 in the SuperS movie looks like Mina.

ß Oops.

ß It looks like they BOTH have Kousagi’s hair.

In episode 75, for a split second, Usagi has her natural coloring! However she also has Chibi Moon’s future costume. ^_^ Lookit!

Dolls and other forms of merchandise are heavily featured in Sailormoon. Some argue it was all an advertising ploy, but I consider it a random collection of funny sight gags, like the above pic. Look carefully, Palla Palla has a Daruma with her. (Wikipedia it!)

Dolls and magazines are the most featured of all the goodies in the series. Take in a few shots, Queen Beryl is in one. Can you find her?

ß Now, in case you are wondering, that’s NOT Chibi Chibi. It’s actually a character from a series called Goldfish Warning. I’m not familiar with it, but check out the character parodied above:
Pretty close, eh? I got the DiC VHS of this episode right after I first heard of Chibi Chibi, so I was fooled!

WAS THIS ALL PLANNED FROM DAY ONE BY TOEI???

There are also shots of characters with moon and bunny icons. That’s because Usagi Tsukino translates to “Rabbit on the moon” it’s also funny when you read Parallel Sailormoon. There’s too many to count, so I’ll just put up a few.

Odds are, you’ve heard the rumor that there are hidden scenes drawn in as subliminal messages in Sailormoon. Well, after watching the whole series, I can confirm… IT’S TRUE!!! Here are just a handful of hidden scenes I found:

ß Episode 29. Wait for Luna to run into the glass.

ß For years, I would watch episode 70, and wonder why I kept thinking about Zoicite, when he was long dead by the time this episode aired. Then one day, I read somewhere that there was a hidden scene. So when I got my DVD, I frame by framed the episode, right as Chad falls down, and sure enough, there’s a shot of Zoicite, and a shot of one of the directors!

ß Also in episode 29, wait for the moment Makoto rams her body into Motoki on her way to school. For a split second this image occurs!

ß I keep getting e-mails from fans who don’t read the manga, or missed several episodes, swearing to me up and down that Nehellenia and Queen Serenity are sisters. I keep reminding y’all that Nehellenia is a child of Chaos’s, meaning that she’s Wiseman’s sister, NOT Serenity’s, but with the above pic in mind, I can’t help but see where you’re coming from.

ß A trick I was taught when I was 10. In all theatrical releases from the 1910’s on have a few burn marks tucked away in the movie. These burn marks are secret signs to the projectionist to have the next reel of film ready. The Sailormoon SuperS movie took up several reels of film, despite the fact that the movie is just barely one hour long, uncensored. Here is one of the burn marks, look for them in every movie you own!

Has anyone noticed how most of the Sailor Senshi seemingly hate driving safely?

In Sailormoon R, there are a few episodes where we see glimpses of the future through Chibiusa’s mind. Now most of the time, they give away the fact that Usagi is her mother,

but there are SOME scenes that lead me to question how she winds up staying with Mamoru:

Now, of course, I have to be fair. Not every Moonie adores Chibiusa as much as I do. In fact, I didn’t really start liking her until after I started reading the manga, just before SailormoonS came to America. American fans were first greeted by the annoying spore “Rini” that DiC gave us, and few thereafter wanted to test out Cloverway’s sugary Rini in S and SuperS.

Fans worldwide often criticized Chibiusa because she can appear… evil at times.

Many fans whom have not yet finished the manga cringe, fearing that newer Chibi Senshi ~ Chibi Chibi and Kousagi ~ might be just as “evil” as Chibiusa/Rini was.

Even creator Naoko Takeuchi refers to her as “Precocious Brat” and was not afraid to kill her and even briefly put her out of existence in StarS. But Chibiusa’s deaths in the manga only happened in two issues of the manga.

The animators at Toei however sought out to make her life a living nightmare right from her debut in episode 60!

The following is an incomplete list of things that happened to Chibiusa between episodes 60 and 172. Keep in mind, I am not including all of the times she was spanked, tied up, harassed verbally, physically or sexually, or all the times she was beaten and bullied, since I would have enough to start another website. O_o
